The Wilton Rancheria is celebrating after a federal judge sided with the tribe and the federal government in a homelands case.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., on Monday  issued a comprehensive final order dismissing the remaining claims contesting the U.S. Department of the Interior’s authority and decision to place Wilton Rancheria’s tribal land in Elk Grove, CA., into federal trust. 

A Federal Judge has dismissed the claims by a group known as Stand Up For California, that had sought to stop the proposed Wilton Rancheria Casino. According to the court documents, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit were Elk Grove residents, Joe Teixeira, Patty Johnson, and Lynn Wheat.

A federal judge on Oct. 7 dismissed the remaining claims that contested the U.S. Department of the Interior’s authority and decision to place Wilton Rancheria’s tribal land in Elk Grove into federal trust.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not the beginning of construction. That will come later this year. This week the Wilton Rancheria began drill testing on the site of the long awaited Wilton Rancheria Casino in Elk Grove. Heavy equipment was brought into the casino site this week. Elk Grove Laguna News contacted Raymond “Chuckie” Hitchcock, Chairman of the tribe about the activity, and he issued the following statement:

The National Indian Gaming Commission has approved a management contract for a $500 million Las Vegas-style casino planned in Elk Grove.

The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) on Oct. 31 approved a management contract for the proposed Wilton Rancheria tribal casino-resort at Highway 99 and Kammerer Road. This deal is between the Wilton Rancheria and casino company Boyd Gaming.
